First a few definitions: Coaching - Mentoring - Consulting - Interim Management
Coaching means taking your clients on a self-discovery tour where they learn who and where they are in their job and life and how they can improve certain situations. The role of a coach is in the background asking the right questions; a coach will not give recommendations or advice.
Mentoring means taking your clients on a self-discovery tour where they learn who and where they are in their job and life and what needs to be done in order to improve certain situations. The role of a mentor is in the background asking the right questions, engaging in subject matter discussions and giving advice and recommendations.
Consulting means taking your clients on a discovery tour where they learn where and what their deficiencies are, giving them tools to improve certain situations. The role of a consultant is visible and active, working with the clients together in exchanging ideas and developing tools, processes, etc; a consultant will give advice and uses his expertise actively.
Interim Management is the area where the hired person takes over the operation completely for a certain amount of time. This can be in situations where a managerial position suddenly needs covering for a while till a new manager is found, or when a company goes through a rough time of transformation and an Interim Manager is bought in for a certain amount of time to deliver that change and manage the operation at the same time.
In ascending order one can see the rising amount of activity, visibility and direct influence of the protagonist who calls himself according to his role - Coach, Mentor, Consultant or Interim Manager.
